Why quit smoking

Two years ago in Washington, the US Court of Appeals decided the major cigarette manufacturing companies were guilty of fraud. This needs a word of explanation. Fraud is one of the hardest things to prove. There has to be clear evidence the accused actually knew what they were doing was wrong. This is not something you guess at. But when the courts looked at the ads trading on slogans like "mild", "light" or "low tar" suggesting these cigarettes were safer than ordinary cigarettes, there was no doubt. The makers knew all cigarettes were equally dangerous and were deliberately lying to the public. Worse, there were backroom conspiracies not to compare different brands and to lie about the risks of passive smoking. There were major dollar penalties imposed. This would be a great result if it had also resulted in orders banning the sale of this dangerous drug. But no matter how clear the medical evidence of the risks of lung and heart diseases and the probable cancers, the US remains a country in which everyone is free to do what they want, even if they kill themselves in the process.

Why should this be of interest to men with erectile dysfunction? Well, the technical answer is that nicotine is a vasoconstrictor. In English, it means your arteries contract every time you have a cigarette. This has nothing to do with whether you are really fit or a couch potato. The drug raises the blood pressure and forces the heart to beat a little harder. One of the first results is to limit the capacity of the penile artery, making it more difficult to form an erection. When you are young, nature takes its course and the body overcomes the difficulty. You get to smoke and have great sex. But the evidence is very clear. The more cigarettes a day you smoke and the longer you smoke them, the more likely it is you will suffer erectile dysfunction. In fact, the penile artery is four times smaller than the major arteries in the chest and lungs. If you are going to show any symptoms of heart disease, this will be the first place it shows. So the bad news is that, every time you consult your doctor about your erectile dysfunction, you will be given a very good reason to quit smoking. It helps your blood vessels dilate normally and restores some sexual activity.

You may know that the erectile dysfunction drugs are also prescribed to treat Pulmonary Arterial Hypertension. This is the severe pain in your chest when your arteries will not dilate properly to let the blood flow normally. Just as in your penis, so Levitra will allow the main arteries in your chest to relax, reduce the blood pressure and allow the heart to beat more slowly. Unfortunately, Levitra does not treat the problem. All it does is give you an extra few months or years of relief. So now the choice is yours. If you are reading this because you have erectile dysfunction, do yourself a favor and quit smoking. Remember all the ads that used to suggest some cigarettes are safer than others are a lie. All cigarettes can kill your sex life and put you six feet under.
